  Qianfo Rock

  One-Thousand-Buddha Rock

Qianfo Rock lies in palisades extending from Shamao Peak to the west of Zipen Peak of Qixia Mountain. As a legend goes, Zhong Sengshao, the founder of Qixia temple, once saw Buddhist radiance of Tathagata here in his dream, hence resolving to carve Buddhist statues at this location. After he died of illness, his son and Buddhist master Zhidu engraved three Buddhist statues inlaid in niches. Among them, Wuliangshou (Boundless Longevity) Buddha right in the middle is about eleven meters high (including its base) as the biggest one among all sculptured in Qianfo Rock. Under Datong reign of the Liang dynasty,Buddhist radiance was said to appear again over Buddhist niches. As a result, nobilities, officials and common folks vied with one another in making donations to carve Buddhist statues out of the rock known as One-Thousand-Buddha Rock since there were one thousand Buddhist statues as claimed. Some of these Buddhist statues are in a sitting manner and some in a standing posture. The biggest one is over ten me-ters high while the smallest one is so tiny. They are all exquisitely shaped.
