The Second Spring in the Area to the South of the Yangtze River
Originally named Yuhua Spring, it is situated at Donggang of Yuhuatai. It is also called Yongning Spring since this spring with limpid water lies in Yongning Temple. The spring has two holes, with water brimming one meter above the ground. The nice-looking and tasty water is marvelously characterized by its delicacy, fineness, coolness, freshness and sweetness. On his way to Sichuan province to take up his official post, Lu You, a fa-mous patriotic poet in the Southern Song dynasty, toured Yuhautai in Nanjing and made tea with water from this spring. Speaking highly of its quality, he appraised it as the second spring in the area to the south of the Yangtze River, ranking number one among all noted springs in Nanjing. In the Ming dynasty, Zhao Qian wrote an inscription on a horizontal board for it, but "Jiangnan" (standing for the area to the south of the Yangtze River) was added by someone in the following years. Now, "The second spring in the area to the south of the Yangtze River" engraved on the marble was inscribed by Xiao Xian, a renowned Chinese calligrapher of contemporary times.
